About

Hi, I’m Ally DeFreitas! Educator, tutor, and the founder of Ivy Consulting & Tutoring.

I’ve spent over fourteen years working with children and young adults, including seven years in the classroom teaching middle and high school English. I’m the kind of teacher who loves a crowded graphic organizer and a messy first draft; I believe that rigor and compassion can and should coexist, and I know that the best plan is the one your student will benefit from.

My approach is student-centered and affirming to students with neurodiverse needs. I specialize in writing and reading instruction, executive function coaching, test preparation skills, and mentorship throughout the college application process. I speak English, Portuguese, and Spanish, and I’m comfortable supporting students across languages and cultures.

Outside the classroom, I’m a lifelong learner and avid reader who loves helping students find books, ideas, and paths that light them up.

Ivy’s Method

I believe in a personalized, student-centered approach to academic mentorship rooted in progressive educational theory and over a decade of hands-on experience. This method blends the principles of Whole Student Education with the psychological and scientifically approved insights of Maslow, Dewey, Piaget, Vygotsky, etc., and continues to be developed according to recent scientific research.

Rather than offering one-size-fits-all solutions, the method begins with understanding each student: their strengths, passions, challenges, and goals. From there, I craft a custom academic plan that includes private tutoring, targeted support in writing, standardized test prep, and the college admissions process. The method emphasizes critical thinking, self-awareness, and clarity of expression, guiding students not only to elite academic institutions but also toward a more profound understanding of who they are as learners and leaders.

I also have extensive experience working with neurodivergent students, including those with ADHD, dyslexia, and learning disabilities, as well as students on the autism spectrum disorder. I provide tailored strategies to support executive functioning, reading comprehension, writing fluency, and confidence, helping every student access their full academic and creative potential.
